Following extensive research that used the same methodology as for all other Latin-American countries, we were unable to find any evidence of organised counselling structures (e.g. associations, counsellor education programs, counselling services) in El Salvador. Although disappointing, we hope that having identified the absence of counselling through this mapping project, we will be able to seek ways in which to advocate for the inclusion of counselling in the El Salvadorian government’s plans to improve the mental health and well-being of their population. This engagement will take place as part of IAC advocacy in the Latin American region.

The sporadic examples of the practice of counselling that we found in El Salvador were:

• Voluntary HIV counselling services administered and managed by Family Health International (FHI).
• Two privately run family counselling centres in the capital, San Salvador.
• The development of a training manual by the Ministry of Health for HIV/AIDS counsellors and education facilitators with support from the United States Agency for International Development.
