Background & Context

Following extensive research that used the same methodology as for all other Latin-American countries, we were unable to find any evidence of organised counselling structures (e.g. associations, counsellor education programs, counselling services) in French Guiana. Although disappointing, we hope that having identified the absence of counselling through this mapping project, we will be able to seek ways in which to advocate for the inclusion of counselling in the French Guianan government’s plans to improve the mental health and well-being of their population. This engagement will take place as part of IAC advocacy in the Latin American region.

Practice Settings

The sporadic examples of the practice of counselling that we found in French Guiana were:

  • A European Social Fund (ESF) operational program (OP) for France’s overseas region of French Guiana (Guyane), targeting young people and jobseekers with the aim of helping them through counselling, guidance, and training in job-relevant skills.
  • Voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VCT) in Cayenne, French Guiana.
