The country does not have disability benefits for persons with mental disorders. However, NGOS, are involved with mental health in the country. They are mainly involved in promotion and prevention. In addition, Gabon has specific programmes for mental health for indigenous population. Due to a lack of technical people and resources, it is not possible to have services for all special groups of population.
Moreover, the majority of primary health care doctors and nurses have not received official in-service training on mental health within the last five years. Officially approved manuals on the management and treatment of mental disorders are not available in the majority of primary health care clinics.
A challenge present for counselling and the mental health field in general is that Gabon has yet to establish and acknowledge a standardized mental health policy.
