Following extensive research that used the same methodology as for all other Latin-American countries, we were unable to find any evidence of organised counselling structures (e.g. associations, counsellor education programs, counselling services) in Guyana. Although disappointing, we hope that having identified the absence of counselling through this mapping project, we will be able to seek ways in which to advocate for the inclusion of counselling in the Guyanese government’s plans to improve the mental health and well-being of their population. This engagement will take place as part of IAC advocacy in the Latin American region.
The sporadic examples of the practice of counselling that we found in Guyana were:
- In 2008, partnership between the Ministry of Human Services, Ministry of Education, and UNICEF to support programs to enhance the capacity of communities to address the mental health consequences of trauma exposure on children and youth.
- A partnership (also in 2008) between two U.S.-based NGOs (Phoenix Recovery and the Salvation Army) providing substance abuse counselling and residential care services in Georgetown, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health.
